What The Arrival of Timo Werner Means – And the Possible New Attack Line

Timo Werner

Chelsea sat on the sides, helplessly watching as teams dug deep into the market to bolster their squads. And with the ban being withheld, it meant that Frank Lampard’s team would struggle. Their humiliating 0-4 loss in the hands of Manchester United served to be a reminder of how exposed the team was and how much they would struggle with a relatively young inexperienced squad.

Interestingly, Chelsea sits fourth on the Table, four points above the team that handed them a first league defeat. While Chelsea has had to contend with a thin squad, they’ve equally been working behind the scene to secure some incredible talents across Europe.

Lampard’s been patient

The former Chelsea midfielder has been patiently building a young but exciting team for the past season. With the arrival of Leipzig forward Timo Werner, Chelsea seems to be assembling one of the most lethal forward lines the Premier League has had in the recent past.

Already Hakim Ziyech has agreed to join the Blues from Ajax and is waiting to link with the team in July.

How good is Timo Werner?

Timo Werner arrives from the German Bundesliga as one of the most consistent forwards, having only been outdone by Lewandowski. He’s performed exceptionally well, netting an average of 20 goals per season.

The pacey player can play across the frontline and has one of the highest conversion rates. And as he says, you can’t train speed. It’s either you have it or you don’t.

He made a spectacular debut in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig in the 2017/2018 season, showing the football world that his blistering pace, ice-cool finishing, and thirst for the big stage will make him a household name in Germany.

Over the past four seasons, he’s been touted as Europe’s next big prospect. On Wednesday, the Stuttgart born forward showed once again why Chelsea should not worry about the departure of Eden Hazard.

An exquisite yet clinical left-foot strike against Fortuna Dusseldorf was a clear reminder of the quality the Stamford Bridge faithful should expect in the coming days.

New Look Frontline

Lampard will have two wide players who aren’t only pacey, but also skillful. The combination of Ziyech and Werner operating from the flanks, and Abraham leading the attack line should be a handful for any team.

It’s a blend of unmatched pace and exciting skills from either flank. Tammy Abraham will, therefore, have to step up more energetic than he’s done this season.

The quality of talent and incredible skills behind Werner, Ziyech, and Abraham should get any premier League manager worried. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic, both proven goal scorers as well, compliment what’s turning out to be a devastating attacking frontline in North London.

Willian and Pedro will most likely move out at the expiry of their contracts. And with the futures of Frenchman Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi hanging in the clouds, Lampard is getting ready his arsenal.

He’s refreshing and strengthening the forward line with some of the most exciting players in Europe.
