The Premier League Highlights: Three Talking Points From The First Weekend After 100 Days Hiatus

Perhaps the highlight of the weekend must have been Arsenal’s second loss in less than four days. The Gunners were coming up against the Seagull barely three days after falling to Manchester City and needed any kind of a win to redeem themselves.

However, it was the North London team that left the Falmer stadium a more frustrated lot. Nicholas Pepe’s opener sparked a ray of hope in an Arsenal’s team that looked out of place the whole Afternoon. Neal Maupay had other ideas, though, striking in the 94th minute to help Brighton grab all the points.

League leaders were held to a goalless draw by bitter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. However, it was the Toffees who looked more lively the whole Afternoon and should have grabbed all points had it not been for their uninspiring forward line.

Manchester United battled to a one-all draw at Tottenham, while Chelsea came from behind to beat Aston Villa 1-2.

Here are the three talking points from the weekend games.

Pulisic was just sensational

Lampard has consistently shown his faith in young talents, and though he’s had to take in a fair criticism of such, it seems his decisions are finally starting to pay off.

On an afternoon when Chelsea fell behind at the stroke of halftime, it was the introduction of Christian Pulisic that inspired Lampard’s charges to a first win after the break.

Pulisic came on as a second-half substitute and only needed five minutes to slot in the equalizer. The American was just at the right place, pouncing on a right-wing cross to bundle home a 60th-minute leveler.

And the aptitude to be at the right place, and get the goals, is what might just cement their champion’s league spot.

A Pogba- Fernandes combination might be the magic Manchester need

The two midfield architects haven’t had playing time together, raising speculations over what their combination would look like.

Pogba was returning to the line-up after spending several months on the sidelines. And while it was expected Ole Gunnar would hand him a starting place, the French midfielder came only as a second-half substitute.

But he didn’t disappoint when he finally got into the pitch. Bruno played ahead of Pogba, with the two top-class midfielders looking more creative, with subtle touches and beautiful exchanges.

And it wasn’t surprising when Pogba won a penalty after he was brought down by Eric Dier.

The Toffees were too solid for Liverpool’s blunt attack

It was yet another Merseyside derby that ended in a barren draw, with little light up a dull evening. And while it was Everton who had most chances, Liverpool bossed around the midfield, keeping a large percentage of possession for the most part of the game.

Nonetheless, Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked more robust, neutralizing the sporadic attacks and switching to different playing patterns during the game. And against Liverpool side that was playing without their talisman, Salah, the toffees kept to their script, ensuring any loss of possession didn’t see them caught out.

They were disciplined and diligent. While they should have won the game, a point for their outstanding performance was just a fair result.
