Who Will Win Europe’s Golden Boot: The Race To Bag The Golden Shoe Heats AS Leagues Enter Homestretch

Lionel Messi bagged his sixth European golden boot last season and would want to retain it amid stiff competition from various sensational forwards. The future has always looked unpredictable since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. However, the same can’t be said of forwards and goals.

Lionel Messi took home a third successive golden boot shoe, wading off competition from established strikers from different leagues. Not even the enterprising Mohammed Salah could deny the diminutive Argentine forward the top prize.

And while Cristiano Ronaldo had an underwhelming performance in his first season at Juventus, the Portugal forward will be eager to increase his tally this season to lay claim on one of the most prized European competitions.

Robert Lewandowski has been sensational for Bayern Munich. Immobile has equally been terrific for Lazio, netting in at will and helping his side push for the Serie A title.

We take a look at Europe’s top 5 goal scorers.

  1. Robert Lewandowski, 34 goals

The Poland International has had one of the most prolific seasons at Bayern, netting 34 times in 68 outings to finish as the League’s top scorer. And in the last decade, Lewandowski has proved to be one of the most lethal goal scorers in Europe, banging in goals.

With a massive 34 goals to his name, he remains a top contender for Europe’s golden shoe.

  1. Ciro Immobile, 29 goals

Immobile has been consistent, no doubt about that. The Italy international has continued to take Serie A by storm, netting important goals for Lazio.

He’s been the top scorer in Italy for two seasons. However, he hasn’t been lucky to clinch the European Golden Shoe on all two occasions.

He’s already 29 goals to his name, with six games still to go in the Serie A. Maybe he will step up this season to grab the trophy from Messi.

  1. Timo Werner, 28 goals

The RB Leipzig young forward has already signed a deal to join Chelsea next season. And it’s probably his goal-scoring prowess that grabbed the attention of the top echelons at Chelsea.

He made a Bundesliga debut with Leipzig in the 2016-17 season, netting 21 goals for the whole season. However, it was a disappointing following season, with the German forward failing to hit the 20 mark.

Nonetheless, he seemed to have stepped up this season, scoring 28 goals in 58 matches.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo, 27 goals

The most valuable player had a quiet first season in Turin, managing a paltry 28 goals in all competitions. However, he found his footing, improving his previous tally to net in 27 goals in 57 appearances.

The season is left with six matches to conclude, and he would be yearning to score more.

  1. Erling Haaland, 29 goals

He made a big move to Dortmund in January, crossing over from RB Salzburg. In the Austrian Bundesliga, he was impressive, scoring in almost every game for Salzburg. It’s his 16 goals at Salzburg that earned him move to German Bundesliga.

The towering Netherlands International had a dream debut with Dortmund, introducing himself to the Signal Iduna Park faithful with a memorable hat-trick.

His 29 goals for both Dortmund and Salzburg put him in the fifth position, a massive achievement for such a teenager.
